HD 189733b is a gas giant exoplanet that is called a hot Jupiter because it orbits very close to its star. It takes about 2 days to go around its star once. The planet looks deep blue, but this is not because of oceans. The color comes from silicate particles in its atmosphere that scatter light. The planet has very strong winds that can reach over 5,000 mph (8,000 km/h). It is also extremely hot, around 1,800°F (1,000°C), and scientists think it rains molten glass that moves sideways because of the wind. Its atmosphere is also evaporating into space. Studying this planet helps scientists learn more about the way planets outside our solar system can change over time.
